With their strong leaning toward a vegetarian diet, the Shakers raised "more fruit and fewer animals," and turned apples into a major industry.
Known today for its crafts, the religious sect's apple products were famous in the 19th century.
By the end of the 1800s, the Mount Lebanon Shaker society had adopted vegetarian habits almost entirely, as this was seen as keeping "in the line of physical and moral evolution."
They raised apples, berries, other fruits and vegetables. Their apple sauce, cider and butter were popular products.
