Sports minister quizzed over pool

Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell will face more questions this weekover plans to build an Olympic class pool in Aberdeen.

The SNP MSP is due to be grilled by the Scottish Parliament'sinfluential Health and Sports Committee tomorrow.

The committee wants to know what Mr Maxwell's strategy is forproducing more elite Scottish athletes and providing more facilitiesfor ordinary members of the public to get fit.

And high on the list is the proposed pounds22 million 50-metrepool in Aberdeen which has yet to get full government backing.

The city council and its partners have been pushing to get pounds8million to help build the pool which would have 10 lanes, acompetition class diving area and 650 spectator seats.

Aberdeen Central Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald, a committee member, said he will be asking the minister to give a firm commitment.

He said: "The SNP made a lot of fuss about the pool before theelection in May. It's time now to get some sort of commitment tosupport this development in Aberdeen which will help the many North-east elite swimmers and ordinary people."
